Geography--Callie Style

Last year, a big focus for our school was U.S. Geography.  We had a lot of fun learning about the states using all of the state books published by Sleeping Bear Press

This year it just seemed natural to go "visit" the rest of the world.  Thanks to some wonderful (free) lesson plans found here, we are having a great trip.  We started out learning about the earth itself and now we are going to Africa.  We have tweaked the plans a bit for our family and that is one of the many things I love about home schooling!  I'm so grateful for creative people who freely share their ideas for others to use.

As you can see below, this is just pure drudgery for Callie.  I'm not sure how much Kate is officially learning, but she is happy to oblige her older sister in dressing up like African women and playing with the animals (which we already had) while Callie and I read.

Thanks to my thrifty sisters who found these outfits a while back.  They were right in assuming Callie would put them to use!

The headdresses were made from play silks and pillow cases with a peace sign headband assisting.  Cameron had the cloth from when he went to South Africa on a mission trip about eight years ago.  I'm not sure if we will be able to top all of the hands on materials for the other continents, but we'll see what we can come up with.

  1. OK...you've been holdin' out on me! When did this happen?? Thanks for sharing!

I enjoyed reading all your blog entries! Yes, you did have Callie 10 days earlier, and yes, you did have a shorter labor. Sounds like you were trying for "brownie points" from our birthing class instructor?!? :)

  2. Great job, Sharron! They look very happy and excited - not to mention more knowledgeable about Africa. ;)

    The outfits are super!

When you do Japan - I have real kimonos that were given to me by Glenn's Japanese business associates. You're welcome to borrow them. Judging by the colors, they must have been made in the 70's. :)
