2014 Bilzzard -- How We Survived

This is what we woke up to Sunday morning.  Absolute beauty everywhere we looked.

Very few cars, mostly trucks, occasionally went by.  At first I would think how s.t.u.p.i.d they were, but then I remembered that they may not have a choice, so I prayed for them and forgiveness for myself for being hateful. :)

Sunday's temps were around 33 most of the day and we had a grand time playing outside in the snow.  It was the perfect kind of snow to make things, not too dry and fluffy.

Kate was in heaven!

We begged and begged the teen to join us and this was what we got.  Beautiful, if not practical, and for about 15 minutes at the most.  She was too busy enjoying her recent read to be bothered with things like coats, boots and gloves and playing in the snow. :)

We built Sally the Snow woman and this is how she looked about 4 hours later....

Kate talked her Daddy into going out one more time, with a little help from me, and I promised hot cocoa.

Then I settled into this.  It's not as bad as it looks. :)  It means Kate is growing like a healthy girl should!  Just a few adjustments needed.

We watched Little Women, (Kate's choice) and a little Larkrise To Candleford (Callie's choice).  We were all set to watch Downton Abbey at 9:00.  At 8:50, the power went out!!  I wasn't too surprised, but the timing!!  Oh!  I went upstairs to get sleeping bags and make up the sleeper sofa for the girls with lots of warm blankets while Cameron got his laptop and tried to find a way to watch it online.  No such luck, so we read Chapter four of the Long Winter.  Very good for a little perspective.  Who could complain after reading that?!  They scooped the snow off the floor to melt for water.  And the howling wind and snow lasted 2 days and 2 nights.  Yikes!  And all that in October, with more to come later.

The electricity came back on around 1:00 am.  The lights came on and I had to get up and turn them off, but we were all nice and warm in our beds.

We woke up to -15 degrees, not factoring in the wind.  This is how it looked outside....

At first glance it may not look a whole lot different, but if you look at the ground you can see how the wind has blown the snow.  It reminds me of the pictures you see of the desserts in the Middle East.

This picture is really how it looked.  Not as dark, but the sun in the middle and the "rainbow" on each side.

I've only seen one car, three tractors and a truck with snow blades.

What you can't see is the swirls of dusty snow blowing over the ground.  It' really cool.

And here's poor Sally.  I'm glad her hat and scarf didn't blow away.

We've attempted to do a bit of school today.  All in the bed snuggled up with blankets and reading lots and lots.
