Thank You Dr. Suess

True confession....reading Dr. Suess books drives me batty.  I know kids love them.  I loved them when I was a kid.  But they are most certainly not my first choice for reading aloud now.

However, I have to say, those books seem to have made the difference around here for one struggling reader.

"I did it Mommy!  I read the whole thing"

Learning the skill has been a challenge because she really could care less.  There are much more important things to do!  Ten Apples Up on Top  was the first book (and only, so far) that she has read on her own for pleasure.  She also asks us to read from a collection of Dr. Suess books that we get at the library quite often.

So, thank you Dr. Suess.

  1. Wonderful! Several of the girls learned to read from "Hop on Pop." (Secretly, though, I agree with you on most Dr. Seuss books. Especially "Green Eggs and Ham!" and "Go, Car, Go!" is just weird!)

    1. My eagle-eyed editor, Erica, has pointed out two errors in my comment. The title of that book is actually "Go, Dog, Go!" If I remember right, there are several cars in the first part of that book, which is why I got the title wrong. I haven't read it very much because, well, it's weird! I try to steer them towards other books. :-) The other error is that the author is actually P.D. Eastman. In spite of that, I stand by my opinion of it. :-D We do love "Are You My Mother?" by P.D. Eastman, however. ;-)

    2. Several of those "dr. Suess" books have a different author, but the Suess label on the spine. I lump them all together anyway. I'd probably drive Erica crazy! LOL
